A home energy audit is often the first step in making your home more efficient.
Completion of the home energy audit process will do more than increase the energy efficiencyof your home.
It will:
- Improve the comfort of your home
- Increase its market value
- Control pollutants (Carbon Monoxide, soil and garage pollutants, and gas leaks)
- Another benefit is that the process will help manage the moisture entering and exiting the building.
- Reduce waste and pollution, protecting the environment.
A home energy audit is often the first step in making your home more efficient.

Home Energy Rating System
|
|
The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index went into effect July 1, 2006. It is a measurement of the energy consumption of a home when compared to a “Reference Home” built to meet the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
The Reference Home is given a value of 100. If a home has a HERS Index of 115 this means that the home is using 15% more energy than the Reference Home. A home with a score of 80 is using 20% less energy that the Reference Home. The lower the score the better.
The HERS Index takes into account a comparison of rated heating, cooling, water heating, lights, appliances, and any on site energy production.
Lending institutions will use this index provided by a Home Energy Rater to qualify homes for Energy Efficiecy Mortgages (EEM) and Energy Improvment Mortgages (EIM).
